Welcome to Eva Cherry Designs

I sell beautiful, funky retro-style clothing. I specialise in pre-loved vintage, customised lingerie and one-off originals.

I blend cultural and historical elements of fashion to create a fusion of styles reflecting the mixture of ideas and cultures that make up New Zealand. My inspiration comes from the influences that I have felt growing up as a Pakeha New Zealander in Christchurch, New Zealand.

This site is currently devoted to my work as a student - drawings, photos, assignments, vintage clothing, original creations and work for clients. My online sales are mainly handled through Trademe. Click Now Selling to view my current auction listings. To check out some of the cool stuff I've made, click Previous Confections. To get in touch, go to the Contact page.

About me

Raised on the hills of Cashmere by two mild eccentrics, I was lucky enough to grow up surrounded by music, books, diverse people, astounding natural phenomena, art, and love. After high school I spent a year at Hagley Community College studying design and photography, followed by four years at the University of Canterbury studying linguistics and working on the ONZE project, which has given me an intense fondness for the kiwi accent. Currently I am a student of fashion design at the Design and Arts College of New Zealand in Christchurch.

These are a few of my favourite things: Earl Grey tea, octopii, burlesque, corsets, camping in the bush, pinot noir, playing dress-ups, mermaids and rocking out when I think no one is watching.

My philosophy

One of the things I feel as a New Zealander of non-maori descent is that I lack a respected autonomous culture; I am expected to identify with my my ancestor cultures, despite having never even been to those countries. I have been raised in a blend of cultures, most of which I am not genetically linked to: noticeably Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Scottish, Greek, Samoan, French, British, Dutch and German.

My designs aim to show the world the distinct flavour of the modern New Zealand South Island; crisp, fresh, often rural and ruggedly beautiful, with heavy Asian, Scottish, British and European influences. My work explores these elements and often combines them with other cultures and eras to create garments that are unique, earth-friendly and most of all - fun to wear!

I try to choose locally made materials, textiles and natural fibres where possible. My animal products are from ecological pest species (possum, rabbit) or from animals which have died of natural causes. For this reason, you will not find much leather in my designs!

I'm always keen for questions and comments so if you want to, get in touch.
